Daniel Grieb Design & Analysis Engineer
B.S./M.S. Mechanical Engineering

Summary

Experienced engineer from an aerospace and automotive background with a proven capability of applying analysis tools to solve challenging design problems in order to deliver robust products to customers. Currently pursuing a PhD at UC Berkeley.

Engineering Work Experience

Cummins, Inc. 2011 – 2015

Senior Applied Mechanics Engineer – Heavy, Midrange, and Light Duty Engines 02/14 - Present

Member of team responsible for analysis and experimental validation of engines from 2.8L to 15L

  • Performed FEA of engine components, including cylinder head for the future Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel

  • Collected vibration data from engine components to verify acceptable levels and ensure durability

  • Performed rig tests of components including static and cyclic loading and bolt ultrasonic measurements

Senior Design and Development Engineer – ISX15G Team 10/12 – 02/14

Core member of team developing the first Cummins 15L natural gas engine for Class 8 on-highway trucks.

  • Developed natural gas fuel system requirements, defined architecture, and selected supplier

  • Defined knock sensor placement through process using FEA, vibration testing, and data analysis

  • Led 6 Sigma project to reduce spark plug temperatures by 40%, with projected annual savings of $125k

Design Engineer – Heavy Duty Engines 01/11 – 10/12

Member of team releasing new 12L and 15L diesel engines for on-highway and off-highway applications

  • Designed and analyzed fuel system components for 12L and 15L diesel engines

  • Modeled parts in CAD and released prints with correct application of GD&T

  • Planned validation testing of parts using iDFMEA tools

  • Designed test to replicate high pressure fuel components failures on shaker table

Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering Hybrid Rocket Research Lab 2007 – 2010

Graduate Research Assistant 01/10 – 12/10

Designed aerospike rocket nozzle for NASA-funded research project. Performed coupled thermal-structural FEA of design. Interpreted results from CFD analysis performed by outside research partner. Optimized flow geometry in the converging region of the nozzle with respect to gas flow and thermal stresses.

Undergraduate Research Assistant 01/07 – 08/09

Studied solid-liquid hybrid rocket motors. Researched technical papers on hybrid rocket motor development. Designed and procured fuel grain molds from machine shop, and cast the rocket fuel grains. Tested different fuel grain geometries in rocket motor firing lab tests.
